Heat Pump Technology: Everything You Need to Know

Heat pumps produce heating and hot water for your home and needs. By using environmental energy, heat pumps can deliver all the heating and hot water you need at a vastly reduced cost compared to other systems. Let’s take a closer look at heat pump technology.

How Does a Heat Pump Work?

Heat pumps work by extracting heat (thermal energy) from the air, ground, or a local water source. This heat causes the refrigerant liquid in your heat pump to evaporate into a gas. The gas is moved through a compressor which causes an increase in pressure, resulting in rising temperatures.

Once heated, the gas is passed over the heat pump’s internal heat exchange surface before being transferred into your heating and hot water system to warm your home.

Heat Pump Types

There are two main types of heat pumps. These are: air-source and ground-source. Although this page will only explore Air-to-Water source heat pumps.

Air Source Heat Pump

An air source heat pump extracts heat from outside your home and feeds it into your wet central heating system. To work effectively and for you to enjoy the full efficiency benefits, air-to-water heat pumps are best suited to new-build properties or homes that are properly insulated and fully energy efficient.

Hybrid Heat Pump

You can also opt for the hybrid heat pump. This system, also known as a Dual Energy System, integrates a heat pump with your traditional gas boiler to heat your home.  We may even be able to make use of your existing gas boiler with a heat pump, saving you money on the installation cost.

By monitoring the temperature outdoors, a hybrid heat pump system will automatically select the most energy efficient way to warm your home and hot water.

The 5 Benefits of Heat Pumps

Heat pumps are fast becoming the UK’s most popular heating and hot water system. Here are just some of the benefits:

1. Saves Fuel Cost

Is your home currently heated by fossil fuels such as gas or oil? Then swapping to a heat pump will offer significant savings on your fuel costs by helping to heat your home more sustainably. In addition to fuel cost savings, heat pumps remove the need for oil tanks and fuel deliveries, which is a huge time and space-saver for many.

2. Boosts Heating Efficiency

When a heat pump is professionally installed by a member of our team, you can enjoy high-performance heating efficiency. Heat pumps maximise their output for the energy consumed and are significantly more efficient than other heating systems. So, if you want to reduce your carbon footprint and enjoy an efficient heating system, heat pumps are the solution for you.

3. Low Maintenance

When considering heating options for your home, low maintenance is key. Heat pumps are an excellent low-maintenance heating option. When professionally installed by our team of expert heat pump installers, you can adjust the temperature as required and sit back and enjoy.

Just be sure to remember to book your annual service. Heat pumps may be low maintenance but annual servicing is still mandatory to maintain your warranty - just like a boiler. Heat pump servicing keeps the system running smoothly and can help avoid costly repairs.

4. VAT-free Heat Pump Installation

As chancellor, Rishi Sunak recently announced that VAT has been cut from 5% to 0% for  homeowners installing energy efficient systems such as heat pumps, solar panels, and insulation. This is in an effort to reduce the cost of heat pump installation, support improved sustainability in UK homes, and help people save more on their energy bills.

Heat pumps are the future of heating. Installing a heat pump now will help you embrace technology that is ahead of the curve and future-proof your home and energy consumption.

Heat Pump Installation in Brighton, Hove and Worthing

Have you had a heat pump installed but aren’t sure when to book a heat pump service?

Many people who have had heat pumps installed end up coming to City Warmth to have them serviced.  Whilst some companies specialise in the installation of heat pumps we offer both heat pump installation and heat pump servicing.

Heat Pump Servicing: Why is it Important?

Similar to a car, air-source heat pumps should be serviced on a yearly basis. The servicing covers inspecting, cleaning and adjusting many elements of the heat pump and the controller.  Annual checks on the condition of the unit and the control mechanism employed ensure you are getting and continue to get the best SCOP (Seasonal Coefficient of Performance) possible with the setup you have.

What is SCOP?

SCOP stands for Seasonal Coefficient of Performance. It’s important for homeowners as it summarises your overall heat pump efficiency rating over a 12 month period. For example, your heat pump may have been 500% efficient at specific points during the year but 400% over the last 12 months.

At City Warmth, we install heat pumps with a COP (coefficient of performance) of 500% and hope for a SCOP (seasonal coefficient of performance) of 400% or more once installed. The reason we hope for rather than guarantee this improvement is because we don’t know the insulation quality of your house. Therefore, we can’t say with certainty how efficiently the heat pump will run.

Having your heat pump serviced yearly allows us to analyse it’s SCOP and ensure you are getting the best results possible with the set-up you have.
